While Shih Tzu means Little Lion, this breed of dog is anything but fierce. Shih Tzus are known for their loving personalities, which is unsurprising, since they have been bred to be companion dogs. Shih Tzu puppies and adult dogs are happy, very affectionate, and outgoing; they love to follow their owners around and curl up in their lap. They are small enough that they are perfect for those who live in an apartment or other small space, and they do not require high amounts of exercise for optimum health or happiness.

Shih Tzu Care

Shih Tzus are house dogs and would not enjoy being left outside for long periods of time or being kennelled outdoors. About 20 minutes of exercise a day keeps them happy and healthy, although expect them to want more playtime throughout the day.

This breed need to be bathed at least once a week and requires daily brushing to keep their coat detangled. Some owners choose to keep their coat trimmed short; if you choose this method of coat care, expect to need a dog grooming appointment every six to eight weeks.

Like most dogs, Shih Tzus need monthly nail trimmings and regular brushing to keep their teeth healthy. You also may need to wipe off their face after eating, since food can build up in fur around their mouths.

Shih Tzu Training

Naturally friendly and docile dogs, it is still important to socialize them early to prevent any unfriendly behavior toward other dogs. Be sure to take them on doggy play dates or to the dog park regularly.

Housebreaking a Shih Tzu can be difficult, but staying on a schedule and being persistent will make it happen. Since Shih Tzus are so small, you may also choose to train them to use a doggy litter box. Closely supervise them indoors for the first four to eight weeks to prevent accidents in the house. Crate training at this point can also be beneficial so they have a quiet place of their own where they feel safe.
