A new puppy can be a big and exciting life change. They are cute and cuddly and full of energy. Before you bring a new pup home, you need to make sure you are ready. Puppies provide a lot of love and joy, but they need love and care of their own too. As a new dog parent, it is your job to make sure their needs are met and that they know they are loved.
Preparing Your Home for a New Puppy
Owning a dog comes with a lot of responsibility. The first few weeks of having a new dog are the happiest, but they can also be the most stressful if you’re not prepared. Puppies often like to chew, and they need to be house trained.
Teaching them rules and manners takes time and patience. Preparing your home for your new arrival will reduce potential damage and make owning a puppy much more enjoyable.
Prepare a room especially for your puppy. Preferably one with floors that are easy to clean. Put away the kids’ toys. Puppies can’t distinguish dog toys from kid toys. Shoes should be put away as well, especially shoes that you wear without socks. These smell extra delicious to dog noses. Anything you don’t want chewed should be protected and put out of the way of puppy teeth: cords, electronics, poisons (cleaning supplies, yard sprays, etc.), and laundry.
Puppy Supplies
Before bringing your new dog home, make a list of everything you’ll need. It is easy to get overwhelmed when you don’t already have everything ready to go. It is wise to get a crate and start crate training your pooch immediately. Crates provide a safe space for your dog. Here are some other supplies to put on your list.
- Collar
- Leash
- Dog Bed
- Chew Toys
- Training Treats
- Puppy Food
- Brush
- Food and Water Bowls
