Getting anxious because your new puppy is snoozing the day away? Here’s what to know about puppies and sleep.
Is My New Puppy Okay? They’re Sleeping So Much!
If you’ve taken your fur baby to the veterinarian and it checks out as healthy, then rest assured (your puppy is!) that snoozing most of the day is normal. Puppies typically nap a lot, even as many as 20 naps a day. Why? Puppies grow fast and need the extra Zzzzs for healthy growth.
How Much Sleep Do Puppies Need?
The answer varies, and each pup is different. But, you can expect your puppy to take lots of naps and probably have bursts of energy in between. So, if your furry friend is sleepy, let them sleep.
How Can I Get My Puppy To Sleep At Night?
In the early days after you bring your puppy home, they may wake you up at night. Sticking to a daily routine from the beginning helps ensure your puppy sleeps through the night sooner. Feed your puppy at the same time and go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. This is a tried-and-true way to get your pup accustomed to how the day should flow.
Here Are Signs That It’s Time to See the Vet When Your Pup Is Sleeping a Lot.
Aside from sleep, there are signs to look for that your puppy needs to take a trip to the vet.
- Lethargy: Your pooch should have active times when they’re not sleeping. If your puppy is lethargic, that’s a sign of something amiss.
- Poor appetite: Puppies are growing and usually hungry at mealtime. If your fur baby suddenly seems to lose interest in food, check it out with your vet.
- Changes in behavior: Shifts in behavior also warrant a trip to the vet.
